Question posed by Sarah: Can anyone recommend student loans for people with bad credit, other than federal/stafford loans?
I was sick for a few years and unable to work. Because of this, I missed several payments and my credit score is around 500 now. I have been working for about 8 months and all of my accounts are current. I want to go back to school next semester, but do not know if I will be able to cover all of the expenses. I have been looking for scholarships and filled out my fasfa. Are there any student loans with reasonable interest rates for college students with bad credit. Does anyone have recommendations of people I could obtain wise advice from about getting a student loan?
Thank you!

go to a credit unioin and apply and ask there. Also would try community groups for example The Lions Club Kiwanis etc. Also if close family member for example is a carpenter try scholarships from Carpenters Union if a teacher, local teachers union etc.

A question asked by verry_cherry_chica: Does anyone know of any private student loans for people with bad credit?
I am trying to get a private student loan. I got one last year, with a cosigner, and now, using the same cosigner, they are denying me! They are saying that my cosigner is now “uncreditworthy.” If anyone knows of a private, non-TERI loan for someone with bad credit, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I already had to forfeit this quarter because I can’t get any money!

Why do you want private loans? Government aid seems to be the best way to go because they have various payment options. From what I’ve heard, banks have stricter policies now as far as student loans go.

It would probably be better to look at your own debt, find out how much you have borrowed of the different kinds and then use a repayment calculator to determine the monthly payments. The monthly minimum is going to change depending on the repayment options you choose, and the level of debt you have incurred as well. These are great questions to run by your financial aid office. They should have a counselor who is able to speak to you about your repayment responsibilities, or even the lender of your loans as well.

Finaid.org has some good repayment calculators you can use to determine approximate monthly balances.

Give those a look.

Question posed by Jonathan E: What options are available to people who hold private student loans as a way to lower payments?
It seems as though the only programs available to student debt holders only apply to Federal Loans. Just wandering if there is anything available to private student loan holders.

Since it’s a private loan, you would need to contact your lender to see what options you have.

A question from ross.cook: Student Loans for people with bad credit that take only to co-signers credit into consideration?
I have bad credit, but need a student loan. Stafford loans only offer $ 200 because I am on scholarship, but I still need money for books and rent. I have a co-signer with good credit available. Are there any loans that will just look at their information instead of my own?
And where would I find these?

I am a retired banker and the answer is yes. Some student loans are guaranteed by government while others are not. If not gov’t guaranteed then most likely a guarantor/s (co-signer/s) will be requested. Almost always this will have to be parents with sound credit. This is a requirement because a very great many students after they graduated declared bankruptcy and walked away from these loans. Now the guarantor/s (co-signers) must implement the guarantee and pay the loan. You then have the obligation to pay them back since they will likely be parents.

A question asked by Gavin Cato: How did people pay for medical school before government student loans?
Did they have to come from rich families?

Most detailed answer:

Answer by 04Solara
I’m guessing yes. Before there was financial assistance, the only students in medical school probably came from well to do families that were able to pay the tuition themselves….I don’t see any other way that could have been accomplished.

A question asked by Robert: What are bad credit student loan no cosigner ? is this helpful to to getting loans if people is bad credit his?
what are bad credit student loan no cosigner ? is this helpful to to getting loans if people is bad credit history or poor credit history?

The best answer:

Answer by Richard
Capital One and Orchard Bank both have credit cards for people with poor credit. Orchard even has secured credit cards (you give them money as collateral for a credit card).

Be careful if you use these, their way to make money is to wait for you to mess up and charge you fees. If you’re careful they’re a good credit revival tool. That and time, lots of time (7 years will fix almost anything)
