What is the prime interest rate currently for private student loans? Can someone give me a link?

Answer by Steve D The current prime rate is 5%…this is not the rate you will get on a student loan unless your loan is tied directly to the prime (most are prime plus). Prime rate is defined as the rate given to a bank’s best customers and is not tied to a specific type of loan.

With everything that is going on right now in the economy, with the financial bailout being turned down, etc. How is all of that affecting the private student loans? I have a loan through SallieMae.

perhaps credit will be available but the interest maybe high have to pay more when something is scarce,work hard on those grades an go for the scholarships-good luck

I currently have salliemae Federal student loans at 6.8%. I have an opportunity to take out a loan somewhere else for 2.7 % and pay off the higher interest rate loans. But will I still be able to write off the interest from this new loan as I do with my current student loans?
