A question asked by Eezy: Are private student loans possible if you’re enrolled in a 2 year program at a community college?
I am attending Bunker Hill Community College in the fall and since there is no housing provided by the college I am getting an apartment. I know that private student loans may be used for expenses such as rent and transportation but have not been able to find any information regarding the eligibility of a Community College student. I will not be able to do this without a loan, I have no other funding options. ADVISE ME!

Have you filled out the FAFSA and submitted it yet? The FAFSA is what the gov’t and BHCC will use to calculate your financial aid needs. Your financial aid will include the cost of housing, if you want it to.

You may be able to qualify for some low-cost, low-interest government subsidized student loans. These loans are better than private loans, because: 1) much lower interest 2) you don’t pay them back until *after* you graduate.

Google the FAFSA right now, and get that process started.

If, after you file the FAFSA and receive your aid letter from BHCC, you see that you still have unmet need, first go speak with financial aid at BHCC. You may have options other than private loans, or if you *must* use a private loan, they may be able to recommend one that is relatively good.

If you *have* already filled out the FAFSA, go speak to someone in financial aid at BHCC. Explain that you need to have your aid adjusted to cover living expenses, and they’ll help you get all that settled.

Don’t jump right to a private loan without going through these other steps first. Private loans should be your last resort.

A question asked by Chris: What banks offer Private Student Loans for College Students without a Co-signer?
I am a senior in college and I am a college student. I need to find a bank where they do not require a Co-signer to take out a Private Student Loan? I have no credit because I’m still a student however am about to graduate college but just need a little help.. Please, anyone who knows of a Bank other than Bank of America and Chase please help me out. Thank you so much for you time and consideration.

There is no bank that will give a private loan to someone with no credit without a cosigner. That would be too high of a risk.

Since the repayment doesnt start till 6 months after graduation, I would assume it’s easy to get the loan, am I right on this?

My worst nightmare is to get accepted into a school and not have the private student loan accepted.

Student loans. Joke of the century. The predatory college industry designed to keep you in debt and make lenders and ceos rich. Private lenders have “power that would make mobsters envious” as without any bankruptcy protection, private lenders have abusive tactics and practices. They would rather see you default as that is more profit… Before you say “bankruptcy rights would make private student loans no longer an option” I say: 1. They existed previous to 2005 before the law changed 2. Good, this will force colleges to lower their ridiculous tuition costs.

I have bad credit and my parents cant cosign a loan because they have bad credit too. I have nobody else who would cosign for me. I dont know what to do now because if i dont get a loan for college I cant go. All I need for the loan is $ 4500.00 for the whole year. You need to talk to your school’s financial aid adviser to see if they have any suggestions. Also, try hitting up relatives, and try searching for scholarships. you may be able to work out a payment plan with the school if you are able to work while attending school.
