Question posed by : I need some legal advice. Does anyone out there know if you can file bankruptsy on private student loans?
I know that you cannot on federal loans but these were private loans and did not have to be approved by the college I was attending. I really do not want to do this but I am really financially strapped right now. Would appreciate any advice.

Question by Single Mom: I am a FT student, have bad credit, no job, & a child. Will anyone give me a unsecured personal loan?
I’m getting kicked out in 2 weeks and have been actively looking for a job with no results. I checked out student loans but with my bad credit I need a co-signer and I can’t get that either. What legit student and/or personal loans are out there?

Yes you can. I would suggest going back through Wachovia since you already are on good terms with them (I assume) or you can go through Sallie Mae Trust.

A question from inquiringminds: Can anyone offer advice and/or personal experiences regarding consolidating federal AND private student loans?
I am trying to learn about the best way and the best lender, if any, with which to consolidate my federal AND private student loans TOGETHER into one, consolidated loan and payment. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

From my own experience, I have tried to consolidate both federal and private loans, but have not found anyone who can do that. I know that you can consolidate federal loans, but, as far as I know, you cannot consolidate private loans.

Question posed by Sarah: Can anyone recommend student loans for people with bad credit, other than federal/stafford loans?
I was sick for a few years and unable to work. Because of this, I missed several payments and my credit score is around 500 now. I have been working for about 8 months and all of my accounts are current. I want to go back to school next semester, but do not know if I will be able to cover all of the expenses. I have been looking for scholarships and filled out my fasfa. Are there any student loans with reasonable interest rates for college students with bad credit. Does anyone have recommendations of people I could obtain wise advice from about getting a student loan?
Thank you!

go to a credit unioin and apply and ask there. Also would try community groups for example The Lions Club Kiwanis etc. Also if close family member for example is a carpenter try scholarships from Carpenters Union if a teacher, local teachers union etc.

A question asked by verry_cherry_chica: Does anyone know of any private student loans for people with bad credit?
I am trying to get a private student loan. I got one last year, with a cosigner, and now, using the same cosigner, they are denying me! They are saying that my cosigner is now “uncreditworthy.” If anyone knows of a private, non-TERI loan for someone with bad credit, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I already had to forfeit this quarter because I can’t get any money!

Question posed by vcurness: Does anyone have a suggestion on where I can get student loans with bad credit?
I am a student and I really need additional funds for school. I do have federal financial aid, but I need funds for additional school costs. When I was younger I ran into some bad times and basically ruined my credit. Does anyone know anywhere that will work with people like me…I am kinda desperate!

you are kinda screwed for getting any extra loans if you have bad credit
I am in the same boat. I can only get federal loans, and when they are up for the year there is no more that I can get.
Unless you can find a good cosigner and try a private student loan website.

A question asked by happyman82385: anyone know of any bad credit student loans?
I am 25 years old and attended college out of high school. Due to illness in the family I had dropped out to return home and help out. Since then my grandmother has passed away and I have fallen on hard times. I am not eligible for federal or state student aid due to my loans defaulting. I wish to go finish up my college degree in order to obtain a good job. With this said I have poor credit. I am looking for student loan lenders that lend to people with bad credit or do not credit check at all. Interest rates are not my concern as of now. I simply want to return to college and finish my degree no matter what the cost is further down the road. Thank you for all your help.

In this credit-crunching economy, very few lenders will be willing to give you a student loan without you finding a co-signer with very good credit. Most of the places you’ll find online that claim to give student loans for bad credit are scammers. Sorry. :-/

Question posed by pamv: Does anyone have any suggestions for a good company to consolidate private student loans?
Our kids have private student loans with Citibank. They had the best consolidation options when the loans were obtained and now they won’t consolidate their OWN loans. Can anyone recommend a reputable company. I know Wells Fargo will consolidate private loans from other places, but I don’t know anything about them.

Answer by Suddenly Human
You might try Sallie Mae. They will be just as good as any… but really consider if it is in your best interest to consolidate. Usually by doing so you end up spending a whole lot more money because it takes your terms out to like 25 years or more and the interest rate isn’t that much better (if any). All for a few bucks less a month.
