That would be a grant. Grants are offered for things such as financial neediness (Pell Grant) and “academic competitiveness.” Loans, on the other hand, have to be paid back.
There is the Pell Grant, but it’s based on financial need. Your friend’s cousin may have used that. Otherwise, the government doesn’t pay for you to go to college, the government isn’t responsible for your college education, you are. Start by completing the FAFSA, which is the Federal Application For Student Aid.
The definition of a loan is that you pay it back.
The government’s loans still have to be paid back, just not until you leave college.
The only financial aid that don’t need to be paid back are scholarships and grants.
Each year you need to apply for FAFSA. By completing that form, the college you attend will determine if your eligible for loans (including the kind you don’t have to pay back, lol). You should talk to the financial aid office of the college you’re attending too.
