Your school that you are attending has info on financial aid. I want you to know that on the applications, some students are more eligible for financial aid than others, based on ethnic groups, handicap/disability and other reasons. also try www.ibrinfo.org. This info is from this year/Denver Post/Assoc Press, New Payment options ease school loan pain. Also, if you work in public service jobs, teacher, nurse, etc, some loans get reduced. I worked as a nurse, civilian and military. In 1980. I owed $ 40K to Univ of Miami, that was for 2 yrs only. I attended a jr college/transfer program at Miami-Dade Community College for 2 yrs. Best college I ever attended.. Everyone is looking for student loans. It took me 10yrs to pay back on a quartly schedule, well worth the return.. Good luck in your future education/career. Janet

Question posed by T N: can you get graduate student loans with home foreclosure on your credit report?
I know that you can get federal student subsidized and nonsubsidized loan, but these non-credit based loans only goes up to $ 20,000. The school I want to go to cost $ 60K. Are there any other types of loans out there available to grad students with bad credit? My FICO score now is 445.

Question by Ella Harner: Do you know of a private student loans for people with bad credit?
I am trying to get a private student loan. I got one last year, with a cosigner, and now, using the same cosigner, they are denying me! They are saying that my cosigner is now “uncreditworthy.” If anyone knows of a private, non-TERI loan for someone with bad credit, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I already had to forfeit this quarter because I can’t get any money!

Why do you want private loans? Government aid seems to be the best way to go because they have various payment options. From what I’ve heard, banks have stricter policies now as far as student loans go.

It would probably be better to look at your own debt, find out how much you have borrowed of the different kinds and then use a repayment calculator to determine the monthly payments. The monthly minimum is going to change depending on the repayment options you choose, and the level of debt you have incurred as well. These are great questions to run by your financial aid office. They should have a counselor who is able to speak to you about your repayment responsibilities, or even the lender of your loans as well.

Finaid.org has some good repayment calculators you can use to determine approximate monthly balances.

Give those a look.

A question asked by Chris McKinney: What private Student Loans can I get if my parents have declared Bankruptcy and they are my only Co-Signers?
Alright, I am sitting here with 4,989 in Finacial Aid from my FASA and now I need to turn to private loans. The problem is my only Co-Signer’s (my parents) declare Bankruptcy about 6 years ago. Does anyone know of any loan service that will give us a loan so I can go to college?

Best answer:

Answer by Holly
$ 4989 seems like a low amount to receive for a student whose parents can’t afford school. Are you sure that isn’t your EFC? Is this the amount on the award letter from your college?

Well if they declared bankruptcy 6 years ago, it’s almost off their credit. Hopefully they have repaired it somewhat since then and at least have a decent score. If not, you’ll be eating it in interest.

Contact your bank/your parents’ bank. Only use them as cosigners if you must. Try it alone first. Options: Bank of America, Wachovia, Citibank, College Loan Corporation, Sallie Mae. You can find them all online.

Also if you want to try for scholarships, go to http://www.fastweb.com and see what you can apply for.

You can also contact your financial aid office and ask about work-study.

Good luck!
