An Informative Tool on Paying for Med School

Review Date: May 2, 2000
Reviewer: ,
After having done much searching during my four years as a pre-med student, I was unable to find a book whose subject matter solely targeted the high cost of medical school. Finally, as I prepare to enter medical school, I've stumbled upon Christine Wiebe's book, How to Pay for Medical School and Feel Good About It. It is obvious Wiebe has had much experience in the field of medical education. She not only describes the traditional path of paying for medical school, which puts most students into a large amount of debt, but also explores numerous alternatives to financing a medical education. The book does not just revolve around sheer numbers, however. Wiebe also incorporates the realities of a medical student's pressured lifestyle into her work, thus showing how financing a medical education fits into the big picture. It is also concise and simple to read. Overall, I highly recommend this book as a tool for anyone who is seriously considering a career in medicine.

The Hidden, Hilarious Truth About Higher Learning

Review Date: August 3, 2009
Reviewer: Apex Reviews, Durham, NC USA
From the outside looking in, the typical college campus appears to be a place of honor, distinction, and vaunted higher learning; those who have been there, though, know just what kind of "education" you're most likely to get...

In Party Thru College: The Official Party Animal's Guide To College, author and comedian Dennis Bruce takes the reader on an hilarious journey through the true college experience. Covering everything from scheduling classes to dealing with faculty to picking schools based on their proximity to the beach, Party Thru College is more than just a mock send-up of institutions of higher learning; anyone who has ever attended a college or university (regardless of how short their academic stints) will readily embrace the truths that Bruce presents about the folkways, mores, and misplaced priorities of the typical college student.

Expertly crafted with satirical diagrams and lush, vivid illustrations, Bruce's irreverent volume is a must-read for students, teachers - and especially parents - who want to learn more about what really goes on beyond the halls of higher learning. Complete with instructional guides on how to do everything from sleep in class to vomit correctly, Party Thru College is the perfect gift for high school graduates across the globe. An uproarious, entertaining read sure to have you laughing out loud from beginning to end.

Excellent resource for motivated college bound students

Review Date: January 26, 2010
Reviewer: Ken Sunden, Richland, MI
My daughter is a graduating senior high school student. I purchased this book for her. Within a couple days this book was full of color coded flags marking the type of scholarship and due date. She was able to find over 30 scholarships consistent with her intended field of study that she was unable to find using web, government and school resources. She is in process of applying to all of them. If your high school student has prepared well for college and is motivated to seek out scholarships, this is an excellent resource. Perhaps the best endorsement I can give is that I have had very little time with the book, my daughter has read it cover to cover is actively submitting scholarship applications.
The Scholarship Handbook is a fantastic resource! Another useful review by Frances Kweller, Founder of Kweller Prep Intense SAT

Review Date: September 29, 2009
Reviewer: Kweller Prep, Forest Hills, NY
The Scholarship Handbook, published by the College Board, is an amazing resource and a MUST BUY. Searching for college scholarships is a tedious process and requires energy, a lot of dedication and help from someone who knows how scholarships work." The Scholarship Handbook is an excellent starting point for the scholarship search. You can get additional one-on-one assistance with navigating the Scholarship Handbook at Kweller Prep Educational Center.

I started the scholarship process after I had gotten into NYU, Early Decision, and realized that downside of getting into a top-ranked private university is that you have to come up with the money to pay for it! This epiphany led me to begin the scholarship search. The first scholarship I applied for took me over 50 hours and 3 weeks to complete.

At first, the scholarship application process seemed pretty impossible. I had to write an essay ---- --but I had writer's block. I had to get two letters of recommendation --but I had no idea who to ask. I had to submit a FAFSA; I hadn't even filled one out! I needed to send in my final transcript --but I had stopped going to AP Spanish as much after I got my early decision acceptance I did, however, really want to make some money--and I do mean "make." Well, I applied to about 30 Scholarships. I won two. The two I won covered over half my NYU Tuition.
The scholarship applications got easier over time. I knew what to do; I created a system: I filed completed applications, recycled essays, and reused recommendation letters. The process was painful, but worth every minute. Looking back, I realize that I really could have benefitted from having someone to guide me in my scholarship search. Things would have gone a whole lot faster and smoother. Today, I am using my expertise to help young people in this grueling process. I offer scholarship essay editing as part of Kweller Prep. You live and you learn. But when it comes to the college scholarship application process, you really learn!
Looking back, the grueling process was worth every minute.

The key is to treat the scholarship search process as a job--one that pays really, really well. Otherwise, you just won't do it. Remember, this is perhaps the only time in your entire life where you can basically just write an essay and get $50K for it. No job in high school, or even college for that matter, will ever pay you so well. The time to apply for college scholarships is in high school. You only get to go to college--on scholarship--once! You won't have this window of opportunity again! Go Apply! Kweller Prep will help and edit! Start applying today!

Final Tips:

Remember to treat this book as you would treat the yellow pages--- start with the directory of scholarships various scholarships out there, which are carefully categorized in the first few pages. With a highlighter in your hand and several post-its nearby, you should begin to outline the types of scholarships located within this book that best suit your interests.

Apply widely. Don't be afraid of applying for the `interest in" scholarships. Be generous! Applying for a scholarship that wants you to show an `interest' in nursing does NOT mean that you must become a nurse if you win that scholarship. After all, no one can force you to become a nurse! However, if you have any interest in the field (do you like bio?) you may be qualified for the scholarship. Showing an interest in the field (even as little as a 1% interest) can qualify you for the scholarship (Ever like bio?). Remember: "You Have Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself. You have nothing to lose by applying.

The money is out there! You might as well try to take it! After all, if you don't apply for these college scholarships, someone else will!

The Scholarship Handbook is a fantastic resource! I order these books in bulk for the high schools students I tutor, many of whom have won several of the scholarships with the aid of this book.

Product Description

This study recommends employing "human capital contracts" wherein students agree to pay a percentage of their income over time in exchange for funds to finance their education. The main difference between "human capital contracts" and loans is the variable value of the payments students make during the repayment period. Their financial consequences, of risk transfer from students to investors and increased information regarding future graduates' earnings, make the contracts an attractive alternative in funding higher education.

Amy asked:

I’m going to be starting grad school in the next year and have no experience with the student loans I’ll probably end up taking out. I’ve searched for details via several student loan websites, and perhaps no one mentions it because it’s taken for granted that interest accumulates immediately, but are there any loans available that begin accruing their interest after the student graduates school? Or is this “pay six months after you graduate” just a phenomenon with when the required payments begin? If there are loans that do not accrue interest during school, do they have fines for early payment?

Thanks for your help answering (probably obvious) questions for a student-loan newbie!

student loan consolidation fraud advice?

J B asked:

My wife was having seizures when a student loan consolidator called and tricked us into thinking he was aes. His company is only one letter off and she thought he was having us go online to check her loan. She told him she was not with it and having seizures at the time, but he had her go through the web site and electronically sign a consolidation document. We didn’t want to consolidate the loan and when we figured out what happened we called back and had it canceled.

It has been 3 months now and we just received a consolidation package from another company in the mail. The first company sold our loan to another company even though they told us it was canceled. We never got a hard copy of the loan cancelation from the first company, and the second company isn’t letting us out of the loan.

Is there anything we can do? We have no evidence that we canceled the loan. We talked to an attorney and he said we didn’t have any options. Please help us come up with something we can do.

Product Description

As the cost of a college education continues to increase at a rate of about 9% annually—nearly three times the rate of inflation—more and more college students are taking out loans to cover tuition, fees, and other expenses. Median undergraduate student loan debt is currently close to $20,000, and graduate students end up with an additional $32,000 in debt upon graduation. Pile on thousands more in credit card debt, and many college students today graduate with massive financial burdens that they are not prepared to handle.

In Zero Debt for College Grads, noted personal finance expert Lynnette Khalfani provides a thorough roadmap for stress-free living that will allow recent graduates to focus on their burgeoning careers while navigating the ups and downs of their financial responsibilities.

"Zero Debt for College Grads," by Lynnette Khalfani, puts into plain English what many recent college graduates need to hear: lay off the credit cards and expenses and be a bit more realistic with your lifestyle. --The New York Post
